Traditionally the analysis of plastics and polymers by mass spectrometry has involved the use of GC-MS or LC-MS. In either technique the whole sample or the surface is required to be dissolved with an appropriate solvent.Using DART or AP-MALDI, these samples can now be analysed intact. As ambient surface ionisation techniques, DART and AP-MALDI can give accurate information about plastics, additives and surface treatments without the need for sample preparation
When a plastic material is used as packaging or when a Utensil is intended for food use, it is important to know whether any compounds are migrating from that plastic into the food and hence entering the food chain. Utensils that are used in high temperature environment can also be a source of phthalates and adipate esters which are regulated compounds in most countries.
